A lot of books have been turned into films, though there are two that really stand out as being among the most popular. Those book series are the Harry Potter and Twilight franchises, which helped to put actor Robert Pattinson on the map as he appeared in both of them. Pattinson has been famous for quite some time now, and yet he’s still only in his mid 30s and has a major role in the near future as the new Batman.
Pattinson was born in London, England on May 13, 1986, and was actually more interested in being a musician while growing up. When he got to his teenage years, though, Pattinson had become infatuated with acting, and decided to pursue that path by performing on stage multiple times. Pattinson also auditioned for on-screen roles, and it didn’t take long until he was landing them.
Pattinson made his debut in 2004 in both film and television. He was part of the movie “Vanity Fair”, but his scenes were deleted from the theatrical release. Pattinson was also in the TV movie “Ring of the Nibelungs”, and followed it up over the next couple of years with the TV movies “The Haunted Airman” and “The Bad Mother’s Handbook”. Those three remain Pattinson’s only television roles to date, marking more than 13 years.
It was at this time that Pattinson’s film career began to take off. In 2005, he had his breakout role as Cedric Diggory in “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire”, and two years later was in the sequel “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix”. After starring in “How to Be” in 2008, Pattinson was cast for another film version of a book series with “Twilight” where he played Edward Cullen. The film was a big success, making Pattinson a household name.
It was on the set of “Twilight” that Pattinson had met his co-star Kristen Stewart for the first time. Shortly after they started working together, the two formed a relationship. The two were certainly a part of the Hollywood “it” crowd, and were frequently talked about in the press. Pattinson and Stewart had broken up in 2012, but got back together for a brief period, finally calling it quits for good the following year.
There were good times that they had together, though. On Stewart’s 23rd birthday, Pattinson went all out. Headlines might have said that Pattinson purchased Stewart a Bentley for tens of thousands of dollars, you might be expecting a car. However, the Bentley Crewe that he got was a pen that was worth over $40,000. Stewart collects pens, it’s been said, and this one is the crown jewel.
“He had her name specially engraved on it with the year and wording, ‘From R,’” a source close to the couple said. “The pens have a two-tone 18-carat yellow gold nib covered in rhodium and ruthenium...The barrel is identical to Bentley’s dashboard used in their earliest car.” It certainly is a rare pen, too, with only around 40 others like it that were made.
Pattinson and Stewart worked together for five “Twilight” movies, wrapping up with 2012’s “Breaking Dawn - Part 2”. During that time, Pattinson had also starred in films away from the franchise including “Remember Me”, “Little Ashes” and “Remember Me”. Since the series wrapped up, Pattinson has been a leading man in several films.
Throughout the 2010s, Pattinson had top billing in movies such as “The Lighthouse”, “Life” and “The Lost City of Z”. Coming up, Pattinson has many prominent roles. The one that has been talked about the most, however, is that of Bruce Wayne in the Matt Reeves film, “The Batman”. While it’s been hard to break away from the “Twilight” vibe that people associate him with, a Batman movie should certainly help.
Pattinson is one that doesn’t mind if people criticize his work, as he’s made an admission recently. “I only know how to play scenes, like, three ways,” Pattinson said. “I’m nervous on like every single movie...Because I don’t really know how to act.” Pattinson added that “I’m not entirely sure how to play a normal person. I don’t think I’m great at subtle...I like characters who, when a situation is placed upon them, their decision making process is incomprehensible. I find it fascinating when people make bad decisions. The humor and the befuddlement.”
For the most part, acting is all about passion for Pattinson. “When I’m making a movie, I don’t think about who’ll watch it at all,” he said. “I mean, I do want to help get people to the movie. That’s really the only time I think about it. There’s a part of me that likes the art of marketing.”
