Born on December 7, 1989, Nicholas Hoult was born into a talented family. He was born to Glenis and Roger Hoult in Wokingham, Berkshire, England. His mother played piano and his great-aunt was a film actress in the 1930s and 1940s. Hoult had three siblings, James, Rosanna, and Clarista. Both of his sisters can be seen in various television programs.
Starting Early
Hoult, along with his sisters, studied ballet, performing in many productions including the Nutcracker and Swan Lake. Between the ages of 12 and 14, the young Hoult studied acting at the Sylvia Young Theatre School. He also sang in the choir and played the trombone. His years at the Theatre School gave him a solid foundation on which he continued to build his acting career. During his time at the school, Hoult was acting in small roles but wasn't overly excited about his "career". Even though he had been around the business for several years at this point, he wasn't sure that was the course he wanted to remain on for any length of time.
Being Discovered
At the age of three, Hoult was discovered while playing a small role in a production that featured his brother. At five years of age, he auditioned for and got the part in Intimate Relations. With this major role under his belt, he began appearing in several television productions including Silent Witness, Doctors, Casualty, and Judge John Deed. Although he was exceptionally good at what he did, Hoult wasn't overly fond of acting. He liked it and took it on as more of a hobby than a career. As time passed and he continued to take on new roles, he was still contemplating taking another path and pursuing acting more as a sideline job than his main course of employment.
Enter the X-Men
After his appearance in About a Boy at the age of seven, Hoult gained notoriety for his role but was still not a huge fan of acting. He eventually left the Sylvia Young Theatre School and moved on to Ranelagh School in Berkshire. The next two movies for Hoult, Wah-Wah and The Weather Man with Nicholas Cage weren't overly popular and didn't have good showings at the box office. From 2006 to 2010, he appeared in shows like Skins (a television series) and in several stage productions put on by the West End theatre in London. In 2010, he appeared in Clash of the Titans. He also did a voice-over part in Fable III, a popular role-playing game.
From 2011 to 2016, Hoult eventually landed a few major roles in films like Mad Max; Fury Road and the X-Men series of films in which he played Beast/ Hank McCoy. In 2013, he appeared in the zombie movie, Warm Bodies. His venture into fantasy movies also included Jack the Giant Slayer. While the X-Men movie series is by far his most prominent work to date, Hoult continues to build his list of credits. In 2017, he starred in the film Collide. In his latest venture, he portrayed the author J. R. R. Tolkien in the movie biopic Tolkein.
Philanthropic Efforts
From a very early age, Hoult became associated with several non-profit organizations that worked to support children. He was named as a Young Person Ambassador for the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children. He has also been active with both Save the Children and the Teenage Cancer Trust. His most recent philanthropic efforts include January 2017 Rickshaw Run and the International Rescue Committee.
Although at times, Hoult has been overwhelmed by his popularity and success, he continues to use both to his advantage. As he continues to pursue his acting career, he also continues to look for ways he can bring about positive change in the world around him.
