In the late 1990s, there was a mainstream explosion in the United States for Latin pop music to top the charts. There were a lot of singers that took advantage of this, and that included Marc Anthony. Anthony got his start in the early 1990s, and by the end of the decade would be a household name thanks to multiple hit songs and plenty of awards, making him one of the best selling Latin artists of all-time. Now in his 50s, Anthony is still recording music and doing just fine for himself.

Anthony was born as Marco Muniz on September 16, 1968 in New York City. His parents were both musically inclined, and had come to the Big Apple from Puerto Rico, so they had helped to train the many children of the household. Anthony really stood out, and was performing locally with acts in New York while adopting his stage name, and wrote for some of the groups that had found mainstream success. By the late 1980s, Anthony was ready for his debut, and landed a record deal to set him up for the future.

Anthony released his first single called “Rebel” in 1988, and recorded multiple songs until his debut album with 1991’s “When the Night is Over”. Anthony followed this up with a couple more albums over the next few years that would build his popularity, including “Otra Nota” and “Contra la Corriente”. Some of his songs during this time would climb toward the top of the US Latin charts such as “Te Conozco Bien”, “Te Amare” and “Hasta Ayer”. Anthony would reach the top of that chart for the first time in 1997 with “Y Hubo Alguien”.

In 1999, Anthony found mainstream appeal with a self-titled album that he had released both in English and Spanish, hitting the top 10 of the Billboard 200. This included two songs that were in the top three of the mainstream English charts with “I Need to Know” and “You Sang to Me”. These two songs would be far and away the most successful for Anthony in terms of chart performance.

Anthony released four more albums between 2001 and 2004, including “Amar Sin Mentiras” and “Mended” as his most successful. Technically, the latter would be his highest charting album in the United States. He had many hits in Spanish during this time, including “Celos” and “Ahora Quien”, which was yet another number one song on the Latin charts.

Anthony has been in several long lasting relationships during his career, which includes actress Claudette Lali in the late 1990s. He then married a pageant queen named Dayanara Tores in the early 2000s, but they had split up in 2003. Then, Anthony entered into a high profile relationship with singer and actress Jennifer Lopez. The couple tied the knot in June of 2004, and had two children together before their split in 2012.

After their children were born in 2008, Anthony wanted something special for Lopez. With that, he purchased an eight carat yellow canary diamond ring, and he broke the bank to do just that. It was reported that Anthony spent $300,000 to buy the ring. “Jennifer wasn’t expecting such a generous gift, but Marc wanted to give her something to remember the day by,” a source said. The good news is that the photoshoot that resulted from the birth of their twins more than paid for the ring and the $1.4 million they spent for a private birthing suite, as they earned $6 million.

Since the start of his relationship with Lopez, Anthony has released four more albums. It started in 2007 with “El Cantante”, and his most recent work is 2019’s “Opus”, which was a top five album in Spain. More recent popular songs for Anthony include “Vivir Mi Vida”, “Cambio de Piel” and “Esta Rico”. On top of this, Anthony has even done some acting work, appearing in films such as “Hackers”, “The Substitute” and “Man on Fire”. After 14 years away from acting on screen, Anthony got back into it in 2020 with “In the Heights”.

Anthony has been a savvy businessman throughout his career, which is why his net worth is estimated to be $80 million. Anthony has had ventures such as fashion design and television production, and even professional sports. In 2009, Anthony became one of the minority owners of the National Football League’s Miami Dolphins. “These opportunities don’t come around too often,” Anthony said after buying his stake in the franchise. “It’s quite an honor and a privilege to be able to sit here today saying that I’m part-owner of an NFL team.”

“I say it every day,” Anthony added about his life to this point. “I’m the luckiest man on Earth.”
