“I am a collection of thoughts and memories and likes and dislikes. I am the things that have happened to me and the sum of everything I've ever done. I am the clothes I wear on my back. I am every place and every person and every object I have ever come across. I am a bag of bones stuck to a very large rock spinning a thousand miles an hour.” Born in New York City, he was born to Patricia Brentrup and Christopher Cornelius Culkin, a former Broadway actor. The couple never were married. He is the third of seven children. His family lived in a small apartment in NYC growing up. His father worked as a sacristan at the local Catholic church and his mother, a telephone operator. Culkin was raised Roman Catholic. He attended St. Joseph’s School of Yorkville before attending Professional Children’s School.
Career
He started to act by age 4. His early roles were at the New York Philharmonic in the stage play, Bach Babies. He continued to star in plays, film roles and television roles throughout the 80s. He made his screen debut in Rocket Gibraltar in 1988 and in See You in the Morning with Farrah Fawcett and Jeff Bridges. The same year he starred in Uncle Buck with John Candy.
His fame however came with Home Alone in 1990 when he reunited with Uncle Buck writer John Hughes as well as John Candy. In 1991, he was in Wish Kid, an animal cartoon television series. He also hosted Saturday Night Live that same year. He starred in My Girl the same year too. In 1992, he starred in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York. He continued to act until 1994 when he took a break from acting and went to private high school in Manhattan.
His return to acting came in 1998 with a role in Madame Melville in London’s West End. He also made a guest television appearance on the comedy sitcom, Will & Grace. He did voice-over work for Robot Chicken too. In 2006, he published a semi-autobiographical novel called Junior. In the book, he mentioned: “My father was overbearing. Very controlling. He was always the way he is, even before my success. He was not always a good person. He'd play mind games to make sure I knew my place. I don't see him, which is unfortunate. But I don't have any desire to see him. I vaguely know where he is, and I don't want to know.”
Culkin has also starred in many music videos including for Sonic Youth and Only Son. In 2018, he launched his own comedy website and also has his own podcast called Bunny Ears. On the podcast, he does parodies of other celebrity websites. In a Google Assistant ad, he reprised his role as Kevin McCallister. In 2019, he acted in Changeland.
Homes
He owns a $2 million SoHo apartment. The 5,100 square-foot condo purchased was inspired by the 1988 film Big. He said “after seeing Big, I wanted a loft space with an elevator that opened directly into my apartment, just like Tom Hanks.” He has the place decorated with Nickelodeon game-show décor and also has a Nintendo-themed room too. Much of his artwork adorns the walls of the condo.
Culkin is reportedly worth $15 million.
Personal Life
Culkin married fellow actress Rachel Miner in 1998 when they were 18. They separated two years later and later divorced in 2002. He also has dated Mila Kunis. As of 2017, he has been in a relationship with his Changeland co-star, Brenda Song.
He was a close friend to Michael Jackson and has publicly dismissed any allegations that he was molested by him. He is also the godfather of all of Jackson’s children.
Culkin was raised Catholic. Religion played an important role in his childhood.
