Back in the late 1990s, a young Katie Holmes burst onto the scene by becoming a television star on network TV. Holmes remained in that role for several years, while also establishing a film career for herself. Holmes then spent time doing major blockbusters, but then turned much of her focus onto her family. Now in her 40s, Holmes has gotten back into the swing of things while raising her daughter, and has plenty of work lined up for the future.

Holmes comes from Ohio, and was born in the city of Toledo on December 18, 1978. Holmes remained in her home city while she was growing up, and during her high school years had begun modeling. A bright student, Holmes was able to get into many prestigious colleges, but her modeling career had started to take off and she wanted to get into acting. With that, Holmes headed to New York City to try her hand at auditioning for roles, and it wasn’t long before she was getting accepted.

Holmes got her acting debut in 1997 when she starred in “The Ice Storm”. The following year, she was also in the films “Disturbing Behavior”, “Go” and “Teaching Mrs. Tingle”. The biggest news about 1998, though, was when Holmes was cast as Joey Potter on the series “Dawson’s Creek”. The show was a massive hit and still remains a fan favorite, with Holmes appearing in nearly 130 episodes before the series finale in 2003.

During that time, Holmes had continued to appear in movies such as “The Gift”, “Abandon” and “Phone Booth”. Her post “Dawson’s Creek” career included films such as “First Daughter”, “Thank You for Smoking” and the major blockbuster “Batman Begins” where she played Rachel Dawes. Holmes wouldn’t return for the sequel, however.

Holmes finished off the decade with “Mad Money”, and in the early 2000s had films including “The Extra Man”, “The Romantics” and “Jack and Jill” as well as a miniseries called “The Kennedys” (and a second miniseries called “After Camelot” that aired in 2017) and a guest appearance on the series “How I Met Your Mother”.

Holmes hadn’t been married by the mid 2000s, though she was engaged at one point. Then, in 2005, Holmes began a relationship with legendary actor Tom Cruise. In 2006, the couple would get married late in the year, but not before they already had another big life event. In April of 2006, Holmes gave birth to daughter Suri, who remains her only child to this day.

“I’ve found the man of my dreams,” Holmes said at the time when they first got together. “From the moment I met him, it just felt like I’d known him forever. I was blown away. He’s the most incredible man. He’s so generous and kind, and he helps so many people, and he makes me laugh like I’ve never laughed and he’s a great friend.”

Holmes and Cruise were together for several years, but would end up going their separate ways in 2012, with Holmes ultimately landing custody of her daughter. In her first Christmas as a single mother, Holmes purchased her daughter something very expensive. Holmes got a miniature house for Suri which cost an estimated $24,000. This small playhouse even had heat, electricity and working water.

Since her split with Cruise, Holmes has gotten back into full-time acting after her daughter has also grown up quite a bit. On television, she had a recurring role in the “Ray Donovan” series, and has added recent movies such as “Logan Lucky”, “Dear Dictator” and “Coda”. Coming up, Holmes has several projects that will keep her very busy.

While there is a lot of intrigue about Holmes’ personal life thanks to her marriage to Cruise (and subsequent relationship with actor/singer Jamie Foxx) as well as her motherhood, Holmes remains someone that maintains her personal life. “I’m very private and quiet,” Holmes said. “I try to keep it in perspective because it just is what it is.” Talking about her daughter, she says that “It’s been nice that our ages fit. Every age that my child has been and my age at that time has been a good match. We kind of grew up together.”

Things have been going very well for Holmes, especially in recent years. “It’s interesting to be 40, though,” Holmes said. “Because when you’re young, you think, ‘I’m never going to be 40!’ And then the day comes and it’s like, ‘This is OK.’ I’m still doing everything I’ve always done. I feel happy with where my career is and I’m excited for the projects that I have coming up to come to fruition.”
