Born on April 10, 1988, Haley Joel Osment began his acting career about the same time he started school. Both of Osment's parents were actors and encouraged the youngster by making sure they did not treat him like a baby. Both of his parents were from the deep south, so as a child, he was raised to be a southern gentleman. The upbringing has served him well as he has drawn upon it for many of his roles.
Molding a Star
Osment's father knew that his son could have a future in movies and television if he was groomed properly. Neither his mother nor his father spoke to him in baby talk and each one spent time working with him on enunciation and diction. After the young star had completed his first few roles, both of his parents knew that he would be a huge success in whatever type of role he decided to try. Their efforts were not in vain and to this day, both he and his sister are both active in their chosen careers.
Prime Roles
Osment auditioned for and won several prime roles for which he is still well known. With each movie, he began to hone his skills and got to work with some of the strongest actors in history. The first movie, Forrest Gump, was released in 1994. He appeared alongside Tom Hanks, Sally Field, Robin Wright, and Gary Sinise. As a six-year-old actor, it's doubtful that he realized the impact of the movie, but to this date, it is one he is most known for. For many, it has become a cult classic, showcasing the southern way of life during a time of conflict and upheaval.
The Sixth Sense is another blockbuster hit that Osment starred in. Released in 1999, Osment was cast with Bruce Willis as a young medium. It was a heady topic for a small boy, but he pulled it off and was eventually catapulted to stardom as the movie's fan base began to grow. To this day, his quote "I see dead people", remains one of the most popular in Hollywood. In fact, it ranks in the Top 50 of the most famous quotes.
Secondhand Lions was released in 2003 and allowed Osment to work with two of the greatest actors in the business, Michael Caine and Robert Duval. Between working with all of these well-known actors and major movies, Osment took on a plethora of small jobs in both film and television. He took roles in A.I.: Artificial Intelligence, Pay It Forward, and the Edges of the Lord. He also did voice-overs for several Disney productions including the Hunchback of Notre Dame II and The Jungle Book 2.
Onward and Upward
Osment is no stranger to television either. He has had recurring roles on The Jeff Foxworthy Show, HBO's Silicon Valley, and The Spoils of Babylon. His list of credits is extensive and he has shown no signs of stopping any time soon. He continues to look for roles that are challenging and will give him credibility. Although it may be hard to beat movies like Forrest Gump and the Sixth Sense, Osment has proven himself as one of the most talented young actors of his time.
Personal Interests
Outside of the Hollywood spotlight, Osment has many interests. Golfing is one of his passions. He took up the sport around the age of seven and has continued to pursue it. He was a member of the U.S. Team in 2005 and got to play with them for the All-Star Cup. He also plays in the Annual Michael Douglas & Friends Celebrity Golf Tournament. In addition to golf, Osment also has skills on the piano as well as the guitar.
