“I'm a different person. I don't want to be titled as Courtney Love and Kurt Cobain's daughter. I want to be thought of as Frances Cobain.” Born in Los Angeles, she is the only child of Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love. She controls all of the publicity rights to her father’s name and image. She is named after Frances McKee, a guitarist for an indie pop band in Scotland known as the Vaselines. As a young child, she was involved in many child welfare services because there was an investigation set forth of her parents’ ability to take care of her. It as eventually dismissed.

Later, she was removed from her parents’ custody when she was two weeks old. After a legal battle, they regained custody of her. The last time she saw her father was at Exodus Recovery Center in 1994. She was two. A week later he was found dead in their Seattle home. She was raised by her mother and other family members. She spent much of her childhood in both Seattle and Los Angeles. She was placed in her grandmother’s care after her moth had a drug-related arrest in 2003. Hours after the arrest, she attempted suicide. Two years later, in 2005, she gained custody of Frances.

She was first photographed for Elle Magazine in August 2006 as a part of an article of children of rock stars in their parents’ clothes. "I wore his pajamas because he got married in them to my mom in 1992 in Hawaii so I thought they would be cute if I wore them today. He was too lazy to put on a tux so he got married in pajamas!" She appeared in a spread in Harper’s Bazaar as Evita in February 2008. She also modeled for Hedi Slimane for a web photo series in 2011. She modelled with Alice Glass in a spread for Schon in 2016. She was announced as the face of Marc Jacob’s Spring/Summer 2017 campaign in 2017.

Art

She debuted a collection of art work in 2010 in Los Angeles. She also participated in the group show ‘MiXTAPE’ under her real name in August 2012. She was asked to pick a song and create art that is inspired by that song. She chose Black by The Jesus and Mary Chain. The mix of songs chosen for the project were available for digital download on iTunes. She also had a joint art exhibition “Ghosts for Sale” at Gallery 30 South in Pasadena from June 7 – June 30, 2017.

She has been featured in Rolling Stone Magazine many times. She also turned down the role of Alice in Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland in 2009. She was a guest vocalist on My Space from the album Evelyn released in 2010. She was the executive producer of the HBO movie on her father’s life, Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck. She also was a guest judge on one episode of RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars Season 4.

She bought her first home, a $1.8 million Spanish-style villa in West Hollywood, right by the Sunset Strip. The 3,357 square foot, 4-bedroom, 3.5-bathroom bungalow has since been sold for $2.331 million. The home was in a quiet cul-de-sac in the foothills. It was secured by wrought iron gates. It was designed by Carl Jules Weyl and originally built in 1930. She kept all original wood and tile floors as well as the period tile work intact. Many of the original authentic light fixtures can still be found in the home as well. The two-car detached garage was used as a screening room and recording studio.

Personal Life

Cobain inherited 37% of her father’s estate.

She married musician Isaiah Silva in June 2014. She filed for divorce in 2016 and the divorce was finalized in 2017.
