Early on in his acting career, Ashton Kutcher tended to play a certain type of character. Most of these were aloof characters or slackers that were unaware of their surroundings. Kutcher has proven that he can do much more than that, though, especially away from TV and movie sets. Now spending a lot of his time as an activist fighting against human trafficking, Kutcher still maintains his successful acting career, as well.
Kutcher was born on February 7, 1978 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and he’d spend his entire childhood in the Hawkeye State. It was when he was in high school that Kutcher started acting, appearing in his school’s productions. After school, he ended up at the University of Iowa, but left before graduating to move to Los Angeles where he started landing work as a model. Like many successful models, Kutcher was offered some acting jobs.
Kutcher’s first role became the one that he might be the most known for, taking on the part of Michael Kelson on “That 70’s Show”. The series aired for nearly a decade, with Kutcher playing Kelso for nearly 200 episodes until its conclusion in 2006. During that time, Kutcher remained busy on television as he had a couple of guest appearances while also starting the prank show called “Punk’d”.
The year after making his debut in “That 70’s Show”, Kutcher made his film debut in 1999’s “Coming Soon”. Shortly thereafter, Kutcher had become a leading man in films such as the comedies “Dude, Where’s My Car?”, “Just Married” and “My Boss’s Daughter”. Kutcher even got involved in dramatic roles including “The Butterfly Effect” and “Bobby”.
These days, Kutcher is in a relationship with Mila Kunis, who was his on-screen girlfriend in “That 70’s Show”. However, Kutcher has been married once before. That came in the early 2000s when he had met actress Demi Moore following her split from Bruce Willis. The couple ended up getting married in 2005, and were together for several years before calling it quits in 2011, and the divorce was finalized in 2013.
Kutcher has always been a very giving man, and that includes the times when he’s in a relationship. While he was still with Moore, he had dropped just under $2,000 on a special book for the actress. The book was a collection of hundreds of photos that Peter Beard had taken during his trip to Africa in the 1960s. If you’re unfamiliar with Beard, he’s one of the most well known photographers in the business, and just over 2,000 copies of the books were made, making this one an extremely rare get.
After getting married to Moore, Kutcher would continue his film career. He starred in films such as “What Happens in Vegas”, “Killers” and “Jobs”. It’s been a while since Kutcher has starred on the big screen, though, as he’s returned to his television roots. Kutcher took the place of Charlie Sheen on the hit CBS series “Two and a Half Men” in 2011, and remained with the show until its conclusion in 2015. Almost immediately after, Kutcher starred in “The Ranch” on Netflix, which wrapped up in 2020.
Now, Kutcher has two young children that he’s raising with Kunis and becoming very active in putting a stop to child trafficking. Kutcher has even spoken in front of Congress about what can be done to prevent trafficking, and the awareness that he’s brought from the movement has been a beneficial one.
Kutcher has also had his hand in a lot of business ventures, which includes tech startups. “I love working with the smartest and brightest people in the world on some of the hardest challenges,” Kutcher said. “And oftentimes I make a return as a result of that. I weigh investments based on two vectors: 1. Return. 2. Happiness.”
There is a lot of effort that Kutcher puts forth in everything that he does, and he seems to know his role and legacy in Hollywood. “I’ll probably never be the best actor in Hollywood,” Kutcher said. “But I hope to be the hardest working...I don’t believe that old cliche that good things come to those who wait. I think good things come to those who want something so bad they can’t sit still.”
As for his goals in the business, Kutcher says that “I’m continually trying to make choices that put me against my own comfort zone. As long as you’re uncomfortable, it means you’re growing...I want to be like Tom Cruise from ‘The Outsiders’ and go on and do amazing movies for a long time.” Still in his early 40s, there are plenty of opportunities for Kutcher in the years to come.
