“Saturday Night Live” has made a lot of stars out of those that have the comedic chops to carry themselves throughout entire films. Of those that have become movie stars after appearing on “SNL”, Adam Sandler is one of the most successful. Sandler embarked on his career as the leading man in the 1990s, and has had a lot of classic comedies. Even lately, Sandler has done some serious roles that have garnered critical acclaim to show that he’s also a well rounded actor.
Sandler was born on September 9, 1966 in the Brooklyn borough of New York City. Sandler’s parents weren’t entertainers themselves, but he was a natural born comedian that was able to make all of his friends and family laugh. Sandler decided to get into comedy and acting when he was a teenager, and went to New York University to help hone his craft as a performer. After appearing in many places as a stand-up comedian, Sandler started acting on-screen, too.
Sandler’s first acting performance came in 1987 when he was a character that made multiple appearances on “The Cosby Show”. Also in the late 1980s, he was part of the game show “Remote Control” as well as making his film debut with 1989’s “Going Overboard”, which he also wrote. Then, the following year, Sandler had his big breakout.
That’s when he became part of the cast of “Saturday Night Live”, having many popular characters that he played like the Opera Man. Sandler remained with the comedy sketch show until 1995 and nearly 90 episodes. During that time, Sandler had movie appearances with “Coneheads”, “Airheads” and “Mixed Nuts”.
In the year in which he left “SNL”, Sandler had a starring role as the title character in “Billy Madison”, and in 1996 played the top character again in “Happy Gilmore”. Both movies would go on to become fan favorites, frequently appearing on television to this day. Sandler used this films as a launching pad for his film career, wrapping up the 1990s with memorable movies like “The Wedding Singer”, “The Waterboy” and “Big Daddy”.
Sandler would carry his momentum into the 2000s. He starred in many blockbuster films such as “Mr. Deeds”, “50 First Dates” and “The Longest Yard”, just to name a few. He was incredibly busy during this time, with many of his films garnering financial success. “When I got into this, I never thought about reviews,” Sandler said. “I was just a young guy who was excited to become a comedian and an actor.”
One thing that Sandler has been accused of since the 2000s is coasting in his career with simple formulaic films where he gets to shoot in exotic destinations with his friends. However, Sandler has brushed away a lot of the criticism and has been known to treat his best pals very well. You’ll notice that a lot of Sandler’s movies have many of the same cast members, and it pays to work with Sandler and become part of his inner circle.
In 2010, Sandler released the film “Grown Ups”, which he starred in with David Spade, Rob Schneider, Chris Rock and Kevin James. Without telling his co-stars that he was going to do it, Sandler dropped over $1 million on cars for the gang. Estimated to be worth $250,000 each, Sandler bought all of them a Maserati sports car. “I went outside the other day and I had a new Maserati in the driveway,” Rock said. “Now I think that I’m Adam Sandler’s (expletive).”
Rock also pointed out that it was pretty par for the course for Sandler’s personality, as he was always grateful to be able to work with his friends. “The movie’s like the biggest thing for Sandler,” Rock said. “He appreciates the help.” The film ended up being a financial success for Sandler, as well. “Grown Ups” took home more than double its $80 million budget at the box office.
Sandler has remained incredibly busy since “Grown Ups”, which includes a sequel to the first film. Some of his more notable roles in recent years include “The Do-Over”, the “Hotel Transylvania” series and “Pixels”. Sandler has also had more serious roles with movies such as “Uncut Gems”. The 2019 movie earned Sandler recognition to the point where people were saying that he should have been nominated for an Oscar due to his performance.
In the past few years, Sandler has explained why he works with the people that he does. “I’m not comfortable being around too many people,” Sandler said. “I don’t like being out in public too much. I don’t like going to bars. I don’t like doing celebrity stuff. So most of the characters I play are people who don’t always feel comfortable beyond their small circle of friends.”
